The Temple Mount

The Temple Mount is considered a sacred site by all three monotheistic religions and a trip to Jerusalem is not complete without a visit or view of it. Its name is due to its original purpose – the site of the Jewish First and Second Temples.

The Temple Mount’s vast plaza at times holds over one million people visiting its two present-day structures: The golden-topped Dome of the Rock, possibly considered the symbol of Jerusalem, and the Al-Aqsa Mosque. While the places of worship are Muslim, Jewish visitors at times also visit due to the former Temples’ centrality to Judaism.

Entrance is free of charge, and allowed with modest clothing only. Due to the volatile political nature of the site, visiting conditions might be altered by the police, so it’s advisable to check with the tourist information center before touring the area. Either way, you can get close by visiting the adjacent Second Temple Western Wall (Kotel), open to all, 24/7.
